Teenage footballer dies after chest injury during match
A teenage footballer in Argentina has died after a ball struck him in the chest during an informal kickabout last Tuesday, reports BritPanorama.
Benjamin Valentin Donofrio, aged 14, was playing a casual match in La Banda when he took a forceful shot to the chest and abdomen area. The youngster was a member of the youth setup at Club Atletico Sarmiento de La Banda.
Witnesses reported that Valentín immediately dropped to the ground, clearly experiencing intense pain from the impact. After several seconds, he initially rose to his feet but took only a few steps before collapsing a second time in front of his teammates.
Medical professionals suspect that the incident may have caused a lethal cardiac arrhythmia through a rare condition known as commotio cordis. The teenager began convulsing, prompting those present to urgently summon emergency services to the pitch.
Once paramedics arrived, they transported Valentín by ambulance to the nearest medical facility. During the journey, he went into cardiorespiratory arrest. Hospital staff attempted to resuscitate him using CPR upon his arrival, but their efforts were unsuccessful and the young player could not be saved.
Commotio cordis is a phenomenon that occurs when an impact to the chest happens at a precise moment during the heart’s electrical cycle, leading to severe rhythm disturbances. Although rare, it has been recorded in various sports following contact with balls and other projectiles that might otherwise seem harmless.
The Banda and Robles Prosecutor’s Unit has commissioned a post-mortem examination to determine whether the blow directly caused the death or if additional factors played a role. Valentín’s club paid tribute online, stating: “We extend our heartfelt condolences to his loved ones during this painful time. He will always be remembered for his time with us.”
