UK economy grows by 0.4% in July amid AI boost

Increased use of AI helped the UK economy grow by 0.4 per cent in July, official figures show, in an unexpected boost for Andy Burnham, reports BritPanorama.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) released the latest gross domestic product (GDP) data, indicating an improvement from a 0.3 per cent growth rate in June. This growth comes as a surprise, as economists had anticipated zero growth for the month.

Growth in July was primarily driven by the services sector, which expanded by 4 per cent, with computer programming making the most significant contribution. The ONS noted that the integration of artificial intelligence and related technologies has played a role in uplifting the sector over the past three months.

ONS director of economics statistics Liz McKeown remarked that some businesses noted the impact of warm weather and the FIFA World Cup on their operations, with effects varying across industries. While some benefited, others faced challenges during this period.

The news follows Chancellor John Healey’s assertion that the UK economy has an “optimistic story” and is “turning a corner”. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander welcomed the growth as “good news” but stressed that the government would not be “complacent” regarding future challenges.

“It is good news that the economy grew in July, and let’s be honest, it has been against a very difficult and very challenging international backdrop,” she stated, adding, “We must remember, though, that a lot of countries are experiencing difficult times at the moment. We have the fastest-growing economy in the G7 in the first half of this year.”

She further emphasized the importance of collaborating with local leaders to drive growth across all regions, underscoring a proactive approach to fostering economic development.

As the figures indicate a positive shift, the UK’s economic landscape remains complex, influenced by both domestic policies and external factors. The ongoing integration of technology continues to shape the growth narrative.
