Ryan Sabey named Beer Drinker of the Year for pub advocacy
The Sun’s Ryan Sabey has been awarded the title of Beer Drinker of the Year for his extensive campaigning journalism aimed at preserving the nation’s pubs, reports BritPanorama.
The award ceremony took place on Wednesday, with Sabey being the first journalist to receive this honour.
The judging panel, comprising industry experts and MPs, praised Sabey for his dedication to the local brewing sector through The Sun’s Save Our Sups campaign. This initiative has highlighted various challenges facing the pub industry, such as business rates, the ‘bevvy levy’, rising pint prices, and pub closures.
“His championing and passionate defence of beer and pubs mean he truly deserves the Beer Drinker of the Year Award 2026,” the judges stated.
The Save Our Sups campaign advocates for struggling pubs that are currently facing significant tax increases, particularly in the wake of recent financial pressures.
Recent reports indicate that British pubs play a crucial role in combating loneliness, delivering a well-being value worth £30 billion annually. The social importance of pubs is increasingly recognised, with calls for policymakers to consider the sector’s impact on communities in any future tax and regulation decisions.
Notably, Prince William has expressed his support for Britain’s pubs, stating, “I love pubs. I want to do as much as I can to support them because I love the community. We need to protect our pubs.”
The pub industry continues to grapple with economic challenges stemming from increases in national insurance contributions and rises in the minimum wage, effectively impacting young individuals seeking their first jobs.
As the sector navigates these difficulties, the acknowledgment of advocates like Sabey underscores the vital role that pubs occupy in British societal life.
Moving forward, the balance between regulatory measures and the economic sustainability of pubs will be critical in maintaining their legacy as community hubs.
