Nigel Farage faces scrutiny over £5 million gift and sleaze allegations

A YouGov poll carried out this week found that 73 per cent of Britons would describe Nigel Farage as “sleazy.” The poll revealed that 69 per cent consider his party, Reform UK, to be sleazy, marking an increase of 18 points over the past two years, reports BritPanorama.

This surge in negative perception likely correlates with scrutiny of Farage’s finances, particularly recent revelations regarding his acceptance of significant donations. Over the past two and a half months, media reports, notably from Anna Isaac of The Guardian, highlighted a £5 million personal gift from Thailand-based crypto billionaire Christopher Harborne, which Farage had not declared prior to becoming an MP.

In defending himself, Farage stated that he was not obligated to disclose the gift as it was a personal matter unrelated to his parliamentary role.

Don’t people think all politicians are sleazy?

Indeed, public sentiment tends to regard all politicians with suspicion. Fewer individuals view Farage as sleazy compared to perceptions of “British governments” where 77 per cent share that view. However, he fares worse than several rival politicians: 54 per cent see Keir Starmer as sleazy, followed by Zack Polanski at 42 per cent, Andy Burnham at 36 per cent, and Kemi Badenoch at 34 per cent.

It raises questions about the significance of these perceptions, as a notable 40 per cent of Reform voters consider Farage sleazy, yet this does not seem to deter their voting intentions for his party.

What is Farage alleged to have done wrong?

The MPs’ code of conduct requires that benefits received within the 12 months before taking office should be registered if they could be perceived as linked to political activities. Notably, Farage suggested that the £5 million gift from Harborne could be seen as a “reward” for his long-standing campaign against EU membership, thereby linking it to his political conduct.

Farage has dismissed inquiries into the gift as “none of your business.”

The scrutiny intensified with disclosures that Harborne had contributed £12 million to Reform since the 2024 election, as well as a similar amount to the Brexit Party prior to the 2019 election. These contributions, all declared as per regulations, raised concerns regarding potential conflicts of interest. Harborne’s wealth primarily comes from cryptocurrencies, a sector Farage has publicly advocated, including discussions with Andrew Bailey, the Bank of England’s governor.

In response to public concern over financial transparency, the government moved to tighten regulations on political donations from British nationals residing abroad. Harborne holds dual British-Thai nationality.

Reports of further undisclosed assistance from Farage’s aide, George Cottrell, surfaced last weekend in The Sunday Times. Allegations indicate that Cottrell has provided staffing, security, and housing in the lead-up to the general election and since. This prompted Farage to declare an intention to contest a by-election, asserting that the electorate in his Clacton constituency should weigh in on the “establishment” campaign against him.

The situation has also cast scrutiny on Robert Jenrick, Reform’s economics spokesperson and candidate for chancellor in a potential Farage-led government. The police are currently investigating a claim that a £37,500 donation to Jenrick’s Conservative leadership campaign may have originated from overseas. This matter was referred to the Metropolitan Police in January this year.

The donation pertains to Jenrick’s tenure as a Conservative MP and should not be presumed to reflect on Reform, which he only joined in January.
