Nigel Farage declares victory in Clacton by-election
Nigel Farage has declared victory in the Clacton by-election ahead of the official result – which he will not attend due to “credible threats,” reports BritPanorama.
Although votes are still being counted, the leader of the Reform Party is overwhelmingly expected to defeat his main rival, the comedic candidate Count Binface. Farage had triggered this by-election amid ongoing scrutiny regarding his finances, including a £5 million donation he failed to declare.
Prior to the official count, Farage claimed an “overwhelming victory” to his supporters, asserting that his support far exceeds his previous performance in 2024. He stated, “In doing so, we have beaten the candidate for the uniparty: Count Binface.” However, he announced that he would not be present at the count at the town hall, alleging that agitators planned to disrupt the proceedings. “I am damned if I am going to stand on a stage, having won a resounding victory, and be demeaned and humiliated by nobodies,” he remarked, adding, “I will not, sadly, be attending the count.”
A Reform spokesman further detailed that Essex Police advised Farage against attending due to credible threats to his safety, although the police force later disputed this assertion, stating that they had implemented a “proportionate and robust policing operation” to secure the event.
Instead, Farage addressed a gathering of supporters at a rally dubbed “Farage Fest” in Clacton. He previously faced a parliamentary ethics investigation for not declaring the substantial donation from a crypto tycoon shortly before becoming an MP. Farage emphasized that he would allow the electorate of Clacton to serve as his measure rather than the “Establishment in Westminster.”
Other significant political parties opted not to compete in the by-election, instead endorsing Count Binface. Clacton constituents had the opportunity to choose from what was described as the largest pool of candidates in history, with voting paper extending to three pages. Farage had been regarded as the frontrunner in a region historically favorable to the Reform Party.
Upon his anticipated return to the House of Commons, the Standards Commissioner is expected to resume the investigation into whether Farage breached any rules, which could lead to further ramifications, including a potential recall petition if a serious breach is established.
In a statement, he warned the Standards Commissioner not to pursue such action, asserting, “If I get the result I want, if Standards decide that they want to do it again, well, I think they’d look rather silly.” Defending his position on the £5 million gift, Farage maintained that it was not necessary to declare the funds, since they were given to him prior to his return to front-line politics, intended to cover his extensive security costs amid perceived threats.
When asked if he would still have accepted the money knowing the complications it would entail, Farage replied affirmatively, citing previous security concerns. He stated, “Oh yes. Ann Widdecombe was 78 years old. She was murdered. She had nothing apart from CCTV.”
In recent weeks, Reform has faced declining opinion poll numbers, with Labour rising to prominence among the electorate for the first time in 15 months. Farage has suggested that this temporary surge, referred to as the “Burnham Bounce,” will diminish, expressing confidence in reclaiming his lead soon.
