Kemi Badenoch Proposes Leaving the European Convention on Human Rights

Kemi Badenoch has announced plans to exit the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR) if the Conservatives secure victory in the upcoming general election, reports BritPanorama.

Speaking at the Conservative Party Conference in Manchester on Sunday, Badenoch outlined her vision of this departure as a pivotal step towards substantial reforms intended to reshape the UK’s immigration policies. She asserted that current treaties, particularly the ECHR, are being misapplied, undermining democratic decisions and hindering effective governance.

“Well-meaning treaties and statutes,” she declared, “like the ECHR, are now being used in ways never intended by their original authors.” She emphasized a need for the Conservative Party to reclaim control, stating, “What should be shields to protect the vulnerable have instead become swords to attack democratic decisions and frustrate common sense.”

Badenoch’s statement has sparked debate regarding the Conservative Party’s direction on human rights legislation and its implications for UK sovereignty. As discussions within the Tory ranks intensify, the party’s proposal to withdraw from the ECHR raises questions about the balance between safeguarding individual rights and maintaining robust immigration control.
