Kemi Badenoch claims Conservatives are recovering despite significant local election setbacks

Kemi Badenoch insists Tories are bouncing back despite local election losses, reports BritPanorama.

The Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch declared her pride in the party’s performance following local elections, even as the Tories faced significant setbacks, losing over 300 council seats across England. This election cycle saw the Reform party making substantial gains in areas traditionally held by the Conservatives, notably seizing control of Essex.

Despite the party’s losses, Badenoch highlighted some positive results in London, where the Conservatives reclaimed Westminster, became the largest party in Wandsworth, and maintained control in Bexley and Kensington and Chelsea. Additionally, in the wards constituting Leeds West and Pudsey—home to Chancellor Rachel Reeves—the Conservatives edged ahead of Labour in combined vote share.

One Conservative source suggested that if Labour leader Keir Starmer does not address Reeves’ management of the economy, the Conservatives could challenge her seat in the next election. “If Starmer doesn’t have the backbone to sack Reeves for her disastrous management of the economy — which is crippling hard working families — Kemi’s new Conservatives are coming for her at the next election,” the source claimed.

Speaking outside Westminster City Hall, Ms Badenoch remarked, “I said that we were going to rebuild after our worst defeat ever and we can see those signs of renewal everywhere that we are standing.” She expressed her pride in the outcomes, citing the changing dynamics within the party’s prospects.

However, the local elections also delivered heavy losses, with the Conservative party losing control in Hampshire and suffering a complete defeat in Sutton. Reform’s success in Essex—Badenoch’s own local authority—further illustrated the challenges facing her party.

Pollster Keiran Pedley noted the Conservatives exhibit some signs of resilience in London and Essex despite the larger trends indicating declining support for the traditional two main parties. These local elections signal a complex political landscape, with shifting alliances and voter sentiments that may shape future contests.

This election cycle reflects broader trends within British politics, particularly as parties navigate changing voter expectations and emerging political movements.
