James Cleverly resigns from Shadow Cabinet to run for mayor of London
James Cleverly has quit his role in the Shadow Cabinet to run for Mayor of London, reports BritPanorama.
The Conservative MP for Braintree and former Home Secretary will resign from his current position immediately. Cleverly announced his decision in order to clarify his intentions ahead of the Conservative Party conference scheduled for October.
This development follows persistent speculation regarding his potential candidacy in the race for London Mayor, a role currently held by Labour’s Sadiq Khan, who is midway through his third term.
Kemi Badenoch is expected to fill the role of shadow minister for housing, communities and local government following Cleverly’s resignation. The Labour Party has maintained a firm grip on the mayoralty, with Khan’s leadership unchallenged for several years now.
Cleverly, aged 56, expressed his intention to contest Labour’s dominance in the capital. After informing his party leader of his decision, he stated: “She took it very well.” In an interview with The Sunday Times, he remarked, “Kemi has been very gracious.”
A source close to the Tory leader commented that Badenoch is pleased to see someone of Cleverly’s experience vying for the Conservative nomination for mayor, expressing a desire for a strong candidate to challenge Khan’s administration, which they believe is negatively impacting the city.
To secure his position in the upcoming elections, Cleverly must first gain the party’s nomination. His prior Cabinet experience under both Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak positions him as a strong contender within the party. He stated, “We need a credible big hitter putting themselves forward for mayor of London,” emphasizing the importance of launching a successful campaign from the capital.
He also noted that achieving a victory in London is crucial if the party hopes to see Badenoch ultimately become the Prime Minister. Cleverly’s departure from the shadow cabinet has led to speculation regarding an imminent reshuffle within the party.
