Tories to cut student loans for foreign students, saving nearly £1 billion annually

The Conservative Party is set to announce a significant reduction in student loans available to foreign students, which is projected to save British taxpayers nearly £1 billion each year, reports BritPanorama.

Shadow Chancellor Andrew Griffith will unveil this policy at the Tory Party conference in Birmingham. The announcement will coincide with additional measures aimed at reducing the UK’s sizeable benefits bill.

Currently, around 20 percent of UK student loans are issued to foreign students, a figure that has increased from 10 percent a decade ago, totaling about £4 billion annually. However, data indicates that only half of these loans are repaid, in stark contrast to the 68 percent repayment rate for British borrowers.

Griffith stated, “Labour is handing out £4 billion a year in student loans to foreign nationals, and barely half of it is ever paid back. A Conservative government will turn off the tap and save £900 million a year.” The proposed policy would eliminate access to UK student loans for foreign nationals from non-EU countries, while allowing EU citizens with settled status to continue obtaining loans under the terms of the Brexit agreement.

Shadow Education Secretary Laura Trott has commented on the issue, stating that too many foreign students are exploiting England’s generous student loans system. She emphasized the need to support international students but not at the expense of local taxpayers or British students, noting that lower repayment rates among overseas borrowers unfairly shift the financial burden onto UK citizens.

The Conservatives assert that this policy change will save an estimated £900 million per year, reflecting their commitment to fiscal responsibility. Additionally, Kemi Badenoch, the Conservative Party leader, is expected to announce plans to abolish inheritance tax during her keynote speech.

This decision underscores the ongoing debates surrounding educational funding, the accessibility of loans for international students, and the implications for UK taxpayers.

As the political landscape evolves, such proposals may significantly influence the balance between welcoming foreign talent and ensuring the economic interests of British citizens are safeguarded.
