Zack Polanski faces calls to resign after by-election defeat

Zack Polanski is facing mounting pressure to resign as leader of the Green Party following his failure to secure a seat in Parliament during the Holborn and St Pancras by-election, reports BritPanorama.

Vivien Lichtenstein, the leader of the Jewish Greens, has publicly urged Polanski to step down, stating he made a “big mistake” by missing a critical debate on a motion that deemed Zionism a form of racism. This sentiment is echoed by other senior figures within the party, including former leader Caroline Lucas, who described Polanski’s recent leadership as insufficient.

At the by-election, Polanski was notably absent during a decisive vote that backed a policy calling for a single Palestinian state, a position that has attracted widespread criticism from other political parties and Jewish organisations. His absence raised questions about his commitment, as he was barred from entering Israel at the time.

Lucas highlighted that he “should have been there and he should have voted,” adding greater urgency to calls for his resignation. Lichtenstein described Polanski’s absence at the debate as a significant oversight, stating, “He should have done it.”

After being narrowly defeated by Labour’s Sagal Abdi-Wali, who received 45 percent of the vote compared to Polanski’s 33 percent—a swing of 13 percent towards the Greens—Polanski’s leadership is now under scrutiny. His comments imply reluctance to resign, insisting “of course I can carry on” as leader while acknowledging that the ultimate decision rests with party members.

Despite acknowledging the political fallout, sources within the party suggest that there is “growing frustration” with his leadership, blaming Polanski for failing to properly address the contentious motion and at a critical moment for the party. Observations indicate a crucial step is required to bridge divisions surrounding the Zionism debate.

As the party reflects on the implications of the by-election result, Polanski faces the dual challenge of reassuring his supporters while addressing internal dissent. Green MP Sian Berry expressed regret about the recent motion, but suggested there is a path towards rebuilding unity within the party.

Amidst the growing concerns, Polanski contended his duty in the by-election campaign justified his absence, and while he maintains a belief in the core values of the controversial motion, he disagrees with the concept that the Green Party should dictate the region’s future. Despite the turmoil, some party members believe it is premature to question Polanski’s leadership following a by-election.

There is a collective sense that the failure to perform at the polls should not singularly dictate Polanski’s position; however, the broader party stability may indeed hinge on how he navigates these critical internal challenges moving forward.
