Andy Burnham is set to bring Downing Street to the North by launching “No10 North,” a new hub designed to decentralize decision-making from Westminster and empower local communities, reports BritPanorama.
The Prime Minister has outlined plans for No10 North to be situated at the forthcoming Manchester Digital Campus, which is currently under construction on a former brownfield site off Great Ancoats Street in New Islington. The existing Downing Street, in use for over 300 years, represents a historical centre of British governance, while Burnham’s initiative aims to create a state-of-the-art office building with glass walls, open-plan workspaces, and advanced digital infrastructure.
Due to the high-security needs of the Prime Minister and high-ranking cabinet officials, the campus will feature government-grade security measures, including secure perimeters and specialized communication systems for handling classified information. Although the complete relocation to this campus is not expected until 2028, Burnham is determined to have the facility operational from the outset of his premiership.
In the interim, Burnham’s team is searching for a temporary city-centre office, with speculation surrounding Heron House, which already accommodates GCHQ’s Manchester outpost. Burnham intends to maintain a presence in Greater Manchester, splitting his time between this Northern headquarters and engagements in London.
