Study links waist circumference to higher mortality risk among older adults
A new study has found that among adults aged 65 and older, a larger waist circumference is associated with a higher risk of early death, while being classified as overweight by body mass index (BMI) is linked to a lower mortality risk, reports BritPanorama.
This research, published in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, analysed data from nearly 7,000 participants over a follow-up period of up to 14 years, examining how variations in BMI and waist circumference correlate with mortality rates. The findings suggest a complex relationship between body weight and health outcomes in older adults.
Specifically, men with a waist circumference exceeding 40 inches and women above 35 inches are at a 24% higher risk of early death compared to those below these thresholds. Notably, this increased risk persists even after adjusting for BMI, indicating that waist circumference may be a more critical indicator of health in this demographic.
Contrastingly, the study revealed that overweight men, defined as having a BMI between 25 and 29.9, showed a 46% lower risk of early death compared to their normal-weight counterparts, while overweight women had a 27% lower risk. However, neither class I nor class II obesity was linked to a significantly altered risk of mortality.
Dr. Leana Wen, a wellness expert, noted that while the study identifies associations between obesity types and mortality, it does not imply that being overweight is beneficial for longevity, cautioning against misinterpretation of the findings. The complexities of the so-called “obesity paradox,” where obesity correlates with lower death rates in some older adults yet increases the risk of serious health conditions, were also discussed.
Additionally, the study highlights the importance of considering other health indicators beyond BMI as people age. Dr. Wen pointed out that measuring waist circumference offers a practical method for evaluating visceral fat, which is known for being linked to serious health issues such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes.
The research underscores the necessity for older adults and their healthcare providers to monitor their health holistically, encouraging focus on physical activity and functional capability rather than solely on weight metrics.
The conclusion drawn from this study is clear: a larger waist circumference is a significant risk factor for premature mortality among older adults, further emphasizing the need for comprehensive health assessments as individuals navigate aging.
