Michael Socha discusses his emotional journey in BBC drama The Cage

Michael Socha reflects on emotional depths in new BBC drama ‘The Cage’

In the emotional landscape of the new BBC drama The Cage, actor Michael Socha plays Matty, a chaotic casino manager battling his own demons. His portrayal dives deep into the struggles of addiction and vulnerability, revealing the complexities of a character navigating a tumultuous life, reports BritPanorama.

Socha, 38, finds himself grappling with intense scenes that push him to emotional extremes. “I just bawled and bawled. It was really difficult,” he recalled of filming, indicating the depth required for such roles. He expresses the challenge of confronting his emotions in the public sphere of a film set, describing the experience as both “not always the most pleasant… but unsurprisingly therapeutic.”

His ability to convey raw emotion was first recognized when he played Harvey, a teenage skinhead in Shane Meadows’ acclaimed This is England. Socha noted that Meadows sought out actors who embodied energy and unpredictability rather than technical training. “Shane wasn’t looking for trained, disciplined actors,” he reminisced, emphasizing the authenticity that drove his early performances.

As a working-class boy from Derby, Socha’s early life was marked by rebellion and a lack of interest in formal education. “I was a naughty little kid, not bothered about school,” he admits. However, a pivotal nudge from his mother led him to explore drama, where he discovered a passion that would chart his career path. His initial foray into acting began with a local theatre group after a disappointing primary school audition.

Despite facing personal tragedies, including the death of his father from an alcohol-induced heart attack, Socha draws from his experiences to inform his craft. The parallels between his father’s struggles with alcohol and his character Matty’s journey of addiction are not lost on him. He acknowledges the ingestion of such experiences into his acting approach but prefers a cautious angle on the subject. “I grew up in a world where alcohol and all those issues were so prevalent,” he shared.

To embody the role of a casino manager, Socha immersed himself in real gaming environments, learning from industry professionals. He recounted his enjoyment of card games since childhood, suggesting a familiarity with the culture that informs his character. However, he balances this with an admission that his friends often see through any attempts at bluffing he might attempt.

Socha’s dynamic approach to acting is enhanced by a restless curiosity, a feature highlighted during his involvement on the set of This is England. His more recent projects, such as The Witch Farm, showcase a continued evolution in his craft, where he remains attentive to the technical aspects of filmmaking that intrigue him.

Having turned down the glamour of Hollywood after his stint in Once Upon a Time in Wonderland, Socha emphasizes his preference for the authenticity and vibrancy of UK productions over the isolating experience of working abroad. His steady career includes a range of roles, from supernatural characters in Being Human to complex portrayals in Chernobyl and The Aliens.

Though he humorously remarks on his “resting sad face,” Socha embraces the emotional aspects of acting wholeheartedly. His recent exploration of breathing meditative practices has further equipped him to confront the emotional demands of his roles. “I’d released something. Got rid of it. Just sort of exorcised it,” he reflected on his experiences with emotional release.

As The Cage continues to unfold, the depths of Matty’s character resonate with audiences, offering a window into the realities of addiction and personal struggle, while showcasing Socha’s unmistakable talent as a compelling performer.

The Cage continues on Sunday at 9pm on BBC One. The full series is streaming on BBC iPlayer.
