Max Verstappen claims victory in Singapore Grand Prix
Max Verstappen has cruised to victory in Singapore to win back-to-back Grand Prix, reports BritPanorama.
The Red Bull driver was in complete control from start to finish, maintaining a strong advantage and giving Charles Leclerc no chance to close in. The Monegasque finished second, while championship leader Kimi Antonelli took third place.
This result sets the stage for Antonelli, who has the opportunity to clinch the drivers’ championship at the next race in Austin, Texas, in two weeks’ time.
Verstappen retained the lead from the outset, closely followed by the two Ferraris as he aimed to stretch his lead. Eight laps in, Gabriel Bortoleto’s race ended prematurely when he was forced to retire with a gearbox issue. Around the same time, Lewis Hamilton opted for an early pit stop on lap 19, transitioning from medium to soft tyres but re-emerged behind Liam Lawson, costing him precious time.
Hamilton’s strategy paid off, as he had a three-second lead over Antonelli after exiting the pits on lap 24. However, incidents such as Franco Colapinto’s crash on lap 31 and a slow pit stop for Oscar Piastri affected the standings, with Piastri losing ground to teammate Lando Norris.
A virtual safety car was deployed on lap 39 due to a clutch issue for Lance Stroll, prompting several drivers to pit. This strategy worked well for Leclerc and Antonelli, but not for George Russell, who lost out after the VSC ended just as he entered the pit lane.
As the race drew to a close, the pressure mounted on Hamilton. Despite attempts from Norris and Antonelli to overtake the struggling Ferrari, Verstappen held firm to secure his victory. The Dutchman expressed satisfaction with his performance, stating, “It has taken a while [to win in Singapore], but I think this race was very good.” He also noted the team’s pace as a decisive factor in his success.
This victory underlines Verstappen’s growing dominance in the current season, while the drama in the midfield highlights the competitive nature of this year’s championship. With the stakes high in Austin, fans can expect further twists in the race for the title.
