Nobel Peace Prize announcement expected Friday, with strong contenders from Ukraine and Sudan

Nobel Peace Prize contenders revealed ahead of announcement

This year’s Nobel Peace Prize will be announced Friday morning, with a Ukrainian children’s rights activist, a Sudanese emergency response group, and the widow of Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny among the bookmakers’ favorites, reports BritPanorama.

An hour before the decision, online prediction market Polymarket had Yulia Navalnaya as the frontrunner. She has emerged as a prominent anti-Kremlin activist following the death of her husband in 2024 in an Arctic penal colony.

Other notable contenders include Ugandan climate activist Vanessa Nakate, Sudan’s Emergency Response Rooms—an organization providing humanitarian aid amid the nation’s civil strife—and Mykola Kuleba, who has founded an initiative to rescue Ukrainian children abducted by Russia.

The International Court of Justice, Doctors Without Borders, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, and Pope Leo XIV are also among the names circulating in discussions about potential winners.

This year, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has confirmed 287 candidates have been nominated for the award. Notably, the governments of Israel, Pakistan, and Cambodia have nominated former President Donald Trump.

Observers suggest Trump’s chances have diminished given his inability to facilitate peace in Ukraine—something he previously claimed he could achieve in just 24 hours should he return to office. This, combined with Israel’s renewed military actions against Iran, seems to have reduced his viability as a candidate.

On Wednesday, Trump acknowledged his continued interest in the award, which he has openly desired for years, but expressed skepticism about his prospects. “I don’t know what their decision is going to be,” he said in the Oval Office. “They have a reputation for maybe not giving it to people like me.”

In a noteworthy moment earlier this year, Venezuelan opposition leader Maria Corina Machado presented her 2025 Nobel Peace Prize medal to Trump as part of her appeal for U.S. support in her political endeavors in Venezuela. “I was very honored to receive it indirectly last time by the recipient, who said nobody in history deserves it more than President Trump,” he remarked.

This developing story is set against a backdrop of geopolitical tensions and humanitarian crises, highlighting the ongoing quest for recognition of efforts towards peace and human rights globally.
