Gary Neville warns Manchester City’s guilty verdict could damage Premier League’s reputation

Gary Neville has explained why Manchester City’s guilty verdict gives him no cause for celebration, warning that the scandal threatens the reputation of the Premier League, reports BritPanorama.

The former Manchester United captain characterised the findings as “chilling,” stating that English football is being “dragged through the mud” in front of a global audience.

Speaking on Stick to Football, Neville asserted that his allegiance to City’s rivals had been overshadowed by concerns over the potential damage to the competition’s integrity. “I’m chilled; this is chilling not celebratory,” he expressed.

City were found guilty by an independent commission of all charges relating to serious breaches of Premier League financial rules, as well as most charges concerning their failure to co-operate with the investigation. The commission concluded that the club used sham agreements to inflate revenues, reducing costs by more than £900 million over nine seasons.

City disputes the findings and plans to appeal, with sanctions yet to be determined. For Neville, the implications extend beyond whatever punishment follows. He referenced the Italian football crisis after the Calciopoli scandal, which led to Juventus losing titles and being relegated in 2006. “The Italian game has suffered immeasurably in the last 25 years,” he noted.

While he stopped short of predicting a similar outcome for the Premier League, he cautioned against the assumption that the league is immune to controversies that have plagued others. His concern lies mainly in the reputational risk posed by the verdict, which could undermine confidence in a competition whose popularity extends well beyond the UK.

“This is now coming to our country, this is now coming to our league,” he continued. He emphasised the Premier League as a significant cultural export for the UK and pointed out that leading clubs are often the first subjects of discussion when British individuals travel abroad. “People talk about the Premier League more than anything when you tell them where you’re from. At the moment, we’re being dragged through the mud.”

The unresolved appeal and the subsequent punishment process ensure that the controversy is far from over. City’s leadership remains adamant about their innocence, despite the mounting scrutiny surrounding them.

In the end, Neville’s remarks serve as a reminder of the fragility of reputations in football; how quickly pride can give way to doubt, and how even the most celebrated leagues can find themselves facing the fallout of their own making.
