Andy Burnham faces criticism over cost-of-living support
Andy Burnham has been warned that political slogans offer “no substitute” for cost-of-living support, reports BritPanorama.
Dave Doogan, the SNP’s Westminster leader, claimed that the Prime Minister’s promise to restore hope to the nation “rings hollow” as household bills continue to escalate. The Labour Party conference is set to begin on Sunday, just ahead of a 4% rise in the energy price cap, which will increase the average household bill to £1,723 per year from 1 October.
Mr. Burnham intends to unveil a “new direction” for the country during this event. He described the occasion as “drawing a line” under a turbulent decade since the Brexit vote and is prepared to confront left-wing dissent regarding his government’s approach to the Gaza conflict.
Ahead of the conference, Burnham expressed optimism, stating it was “time for Britain to believe again”. His remarks are seen as an attempt to inspire public confidence amid ongoing economic challenges.
However, as preparations for the conference unfold, Doogan urged the Prime Minister to “put money in people’s pockets,” emphasizing that Burnham’s optimistic rhetoric fails to resonate with citizens facing harsh economic realities. He noted that households are bracing for another difficult winter.
Doogan further criticized Burnham, commenting, “A desperate political plea to ‘hope again’ rings hollow when under the Labour Party’s watch the cost-of-living emergency goes from bad to worse.” He argued that Burnham’s focus on hopeful messaging contrasts sharply with the increasing prices of energy, food, petrol, and diesel.
He added, “Instead of more vibes and TikTok videos, people are waiting to hear how this latest UK Prime Minister is going to put money in people’s pockets.” Doogan also referenced the ongoing “permanent pattern of Westminster’s cost-of-living crisis,” underlining the need for an economic strategy that extends beyond the current Westminster framework.
He concluded by suggesting that every damaging decision made in Westminster over the last two decades has economically disadvantaged people in Scotland. “Through a fresh start with independence, Scotland can use our vast energy resources to help households with rising prices, we can eradicate child poverty and build a wealthier, fairer Scotland as part of the European Union,” he stated.
