Mark Wood announces retirement from international cricket
England fast bowler Mark Wood has announced his immediate retirement from international cricket due to a knee injury, reports BritPanorama.
Wood, who played in 38 Test matches and claimed 119 wickets, was part of England’s 50-over World Cup-winning squad in 2019. He also participated in 38 T20 internationals, securing a World Cup victory in 2022 but missed the semi-finals and final due to injury.
In a statement released on social media, Wood expressed, “I’ve made the decision to retire from international cricket.” He acknowledged that while his retirement might not come as a surprise given the past year, it felt like a natural conclusion at the end of his contract.
“I’ve always tried to be resilient and come back from injury to prove people wrong and show everyone what I can do. Unfortunately, this time I lost the battle. On medical advice, Test cricket and 50-over cricket are not possible, so the England dream has slowly been ground out of me over the last year,” he said.
Wood described representing England as his “greatest honour,” reflecting on the “incredible people” he met and the privilege of playing against some of the best players in the sport. He also conveyed immense pride in how he represented his family, cricket club, town, and country.
He noted, “I have peace of mind that I tried my very best, I gave it everything I had and tried to bowl every ball like it was my last and as fast as I could.” Wood paid tribute to his support team, stating that their care was instrumental in allowing him to play as much as he did.
The fast bowler concluded his announcement with gratitude towards fans, saying, “To the supporters, thank you for your support and cheering me on home and away. To the barmy army, the best fans in the world, the twist and shout will always have a different feeling for me now.”
Reflecting on his journey, Wood added, “Most importantly to my family and friends, thanks for always being there in good times and bad. I got to live out a dream, and I hope I can continue playing cricket in some capacity and pursuing other challenges in the future.”
