Sebastien Pocognoli names first Scotland squad
Sebastien Pocognoli has announced his first Scotland squad since taking the reins from Steve Clarke, reports BritPanorama.
The Belgian’s selection features a recall of Hull City striker Oli McBurnie, who returns to the international fold after a five-year absence. Seven uncapped players have been included in the squad, with Sevilla forward Robbie Ure and Stoke City defender Luke Graham among the most notable additions.
Joining them are Luis Binks, Colby Donovan, goalkeeper Jon McCracken, Josh McPake, and Stephen Welsh, completing the list of newcomers. The squad is missing Torino’s Che Adams, who is reportedly injured, while Napoli’s Scott McTominay is unavailable after minor heart surgery.
McBurnie, now 30, made his Scotland debut back in 2018 and accumulated 16 caps before his last appearance in 2021. His return to the national setup reflects Pocognoli’s intent to strengthen the attack in light of Adams’ absence, as McBurnie’s inclusion alongside Bowie, Ure, and Wilson underscores the new head coach’s need for striking depth.
Graham has gained recognition following an outstanding season at Dundee, having claimed multiple player awards, and his performance led to a spot in Scotland’s pre-World Cup training camp in May. The 22-year-old has since joined Stoke, starting every match during their current unbeaten run in the Championship.
Binks has represented both England and Scotland at youth levels, while Donovan has impressed at Celtic, stepping up in response to an injury to Alistair Johnston. Wouter Vrancken, head coach of Hearts and a fellow Belgian, expressed confidence that several of his players would be selected.
Falkirk’s Scott Bain and Bradford’s McCracken, both of whom featured in squads under Clarke’s tenure, have made their way back into the fold. Other players recalled include Sassuolo’s Kieron Bowie, left-back Josh Doig, and Udinese midfielder Lennon Miller, following spells out of the setup. Notably, fifteen of the 28 players selected were part of Scotland’s World Cup squad this summer.
Scotland will play their first game under Pocognoli on September 26 against Slovenia, marking a new chapter in the national team’s journey as they adapt to changing personnel and strategies.
