Andy Burnham delays Jackdaw gas field decision until after by-election
Andy Burnham is poised to postpone the approval of drilling in the North Sea’s Jackdaw gas field until after the upcoming by-election, reports BritPanorama.
Critics have accused the Prime Minister of “running scared” as the Green Party has named leader Zack Polanski as their candidate for the contest, raising questions about Burnham’s political motivations. Some senior Conservative Party members suggested that he is prioritising party interests to avoid controversy during the Labour conference later this month.
Sources from both Whitehall and the energy sector anticipate that the decision will be announced after the October 8 vote in Sir Keir Starmer’s former constituency. Shadow Energy Secretary Andrew Bowie stated, “It is becoming clear that Labour are about to, yet again, delay the decision on Jackdaw — waiting until after the Holborn and St Pancras by-election.”
He further labelled the possible delay a “gross dereliction of duty,” emphasizing that it places the interests of the Labour Party above the national interest. According to reports, the announcement regarding the gas field could have arrived as early as next week.
Bowie urged, “There must be no more delay. Get Britain drilling,” in a letter to the Prime Minister, insisting that a decision is imminent and should not be postponed any further.
The impending by-election is likely to serve as an early test of Burnham’s appeal among voters. In contrast, Polanski has stated, “We will be using this election as a platform to make it clear that fossil fuels need to stay where they belong — in the ground.”
A spokesperson for the Department for Energy Security commented, “The North Sea remains a vital national asset. Any decision will take into account all relevant evidence received during the consultation process.”
