Daniel Kretinsky becomes largest shareholder of West Ham

Daniel Kretinsky has reached an agreement to become the largest shareholder of West Ham, acquiring a stake of up to 46 per cent, reports BritPanorama.

The Czech businessman, who owns Royal Mail, confirmed the deal with the club’s shareholders. Under the new arrangement, David Sullivan will retain a 40 per cent stake, with Tripp Smith holding 11 per cent.

Additionally, a consortium led by former Newcastle director Amanda Staveley has agreed to purchase the Gold family’s 25 per cent stake. This move allows current shareholders the chance to acquire the Gold family’s shares, highlighting ongoing uncertainty around ownership, which has been seen as distractive during a critical transfer period.

Kretinsky expressed his appreciation for the opportunity, saying, “I am deeply honoured to have the opportunity to become the largest shareholder of this great club. I appreciate the responsibility this brings and do not take it lightly.” He thanked existing shareholders for their collaboration in achieving this outcome, noting its importance for the club’s future.

The Czech businessman has faced scrutiny for his profit-driven strategy with Royal Mail and connections to Russian energy interests. He and West Ham have agreed not to provide further comments until the formalities of the transaction are completed.

Vanessa Gold, speaking on behalf of the Gold family, welcomed Kretinsky’s involvement and affirmed the agreement’s role in providing stability for the club. “My ambition through this process has been to ensure the club had the right leadership and to enable West Ham to achieve its potential and return to its rightful place in the Premier League,” she stated.

As West Ham strives to bounce back to England’s top flight following relegation last season, the club’s management can now focus on the current Championship campaign, having won only one of their first four matches. A new chapter begins for the Hammers, with Kretinsky’s significant stake potentially reshaping their future aspirations.
