Ferry capsizes off northern Cyprus
BODRUM, Turkey — A ferry carrying more than 260 passengers capsized off the coast of northern Cyprus on Sunday, reports BritPanorama.
The catamaran-style ferry was traveling from the port of Kyrenia, also known as Girne, in the breakaway north of ethnically divided Cyprus, to the Turkish port of Tasucu in Mersin province.
Initial reports indicate there are no casualties so far.
The ferry began taking on water a few kilometers offshore, as reported by the Turkish state-run TRT news channel.
Northern Cyprus Transportation Minister Erhan Arikli informed TRT that the vessel had overturned and that rescue crews were already on the scene.
Multiple companies operate ferries on the busy route between Kyrenia and Tasucu, but it remains unclear which company was behind the vessel that capsized.
Video footage from the scene depicts individuals in life jackets floating in the waters around the overturned craft.
