A July attack exposed weaknesses in the digital infrastructure used by the French education ministry, disrupting school planning and communications at the start of term.

A cyber-attack on the French ministry of national education’s IT systems complicated preparations for the new school year, leaving school directors unable to access key applications and portals, according to a report by the French newspaper Libération published on 24 August 2026.

The attack, which took place in July, affected the systems needed to draw up timetables and communicate with parents. Some schools were forced to alter schedules after lessons had already begun, adding to the pressure surrounding the return to classes. In Bordeaux, Toulouse and Nantes, the disruption also reached email, remote access and administrative systems, making it impossible for parts of the education service to function normally.

A disrupted start to term

The incident did not simply interrupt a back-office service. It struck the practical systems through which schools organise teaching, share information and manage daily administration. When access to applications and portals was blocked, school leaders were unable to carry out tasks that are central to the beginning of the academic year.

The disruption was uneven because different academies – regional administrative authorities within France’s education system – introduced different security restrictions. As a result, access to data was restored at different speeds. Some schools could resume work sooner than others, while colleagues elsewhere remained unable to use the same digital tools.

That uneven recovery compounded the initial effects of the attack. School directors were not working from a common level of access or under a single, co-ordinated security arrangement. Instead, the restoration of essential services varied according to the academy involved, complicating communication and the preparation of timetables across the system.

Union criticism over investment

Xavier Hivert, a representative of SNPDEN-Unsa, the French trade union representing secondary-school leaders, criticised the education ministry’s response and its wider approach to digital security. He said the academies had applied inconsistent restrictions, contributing to the unequal restoration of access to data.

Hivert also blamed insufficient investment in cyber-security and a fragmented, poorly co-ordinated IT architecture. His central argument was that the state was now paying the price for savings made at the expense of security. The criticism presents the attack not as an isolated technical failure, but as a test of infrastructure that had already been weakened by underinvestment and a lack of integration.

The claim points to a deeper vulnerability in the systems supporting France’s education service. The ministry’s digital infrastructure connects the tools used by schools to organise learning and communicate with families. If those systems are inadequately protected, an attack can quickly become an operational crisis, even when the immediate target is an application, portal or administrative network rather than classroom teaching itself.

Fragmentation increases the risk

The events in Bordeaux, Toulouse and Nantes showed how far the consequences can spread when email, remote access and administrative systems are affected at the same time. These services are not separate conveniences: together they allow school leaders to reach information, communicate with parents and carry out routine management.

The differing security measures introduced by the academies also exposed the cost of a fragmented architecture. Restrictions may be necessary after an attack, but when they are not applied or managed consistently, they can create different levels of disruption across the same national service. That leaves schools facing a common threat with unequal access to the tools required to respond.

The incident therefore raises questions about the resilience of the ministry’s systems as well as their protection against future attacks. Modernising the infrastructure, investing more heavily in cyber-security and strengthening protection for the servers supporting the education process are now presented as necessary steps rather than optional improvements.

The immediate disruption occurred during one of the most operationally demanding periods of the school year. The longer-term issue is whether the ministry can replace a fragmented system with one capable of restoring services quickly and consistently when digital access is threatened again.
