Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White barred from WNBA
Two former NBA players, Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White, have been barred from participating in the WNBA despite their intentions to enter the 2027 draft as women, reports BritPanorama.
Sources indicate that the WNBA’s decision was based on their understanding that the draft declarations were “simply publicity stunts.” There is mounting frustration that the league would not entertain what are perceived as efforts to “mock the league or use this topic to demean and marginalise others.”
The WNBA’s eligibility criteria, established through collective bargaining, states only one gender-specific rule: “Only players who are women are eligible to play in the WNBA.” This provision allows for the participation of trans athletes in women’s sports.
Two weeks prior, the league communicated with teams about reviewing these eligibility rules. The discussions come as the WNBA seeks to navigate the complexities heightened by the ongoing debates surrounding gender identity in sports.
In the midst of this controversy, Freedom, who previously played for the Boston Celtics, appeared courtside at a WNBA game wearing a shirt that stated, “WOMAN: Adult human female.” This incident escalated when Natasha Cloud, a player for the Chicago Sky, confronted him mid-game.
Following the altercation, Freedom was escorted from the arena. He later took to social media to express his discontent, stating, “I just got kicked out of a WNBA game for supporting WOMEN! Let that sink in, AMERICA!” Cloud responded robustly, affirming her support for the trans community and asserting that all individuals belong and are accepted.
In the game itself, the Indiana Fever triumphed over the Chicago Sky with a score of 113-90, featuring performances from Caitlyn Clark and Sophie Cunningham, whose contribution to the points was notably lower.
Amidst these debates, recent fan disruptions have occurred, including incidents involving sex toys being thrown onto the court during games, attributed to cryptocurrency traders aiming to bring attention to the ongoing controversy regarding the definition of gender in the WNBA.
