Jamie Carragher doubts Michael Carrick’s chances with Manchester United

Jamie Carragher has expressed skepticism about Michael Carrick’s ability to lead Manchester United to a Premier League title this season, reports BritPanorama.

After taking the managerial position on a permanent basis following a successful temporary stint, Carrick guided United to a third-place finish last season, securing Champions League qualification. However, Carragher believes the added pressures of European football will challenge Carrick’s progress this term.

“I’m not saying it’s going to go wrong. What Manchester United have had for the last six months, need that for another 12 months of not being the circus, not being the story all the time, and Carrick brings you that,” Carragher stated. Yet, he raised concerns about whether Carrick possesses the necessary “stardust” to clinch top trophies, indicating a need for a stronger managerial presence.

“I personally just don’t think Michael Carrick’s got that stardust as a manager to win a Champions League or a Premier League. I don’t believe Michael Carrick will win the league or the Champions League with Manchester United, but he’s done a really good job,” Carragher added, acknowledging Carrick’s commendable performance thus far.

Carrick’s squad has seen bolstered midfield options this summer with the additions of Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos. Nevertheless, Carragher lamented United’s missed opportunity to acquire Mateus Fernandes, who transferred to Tottenham for £85 million, remarking on his potential impact at Old Trafford.

“I just looked at him and his age and was surprised United didn’t go for Fernandes. They said it was too expensive, but was it that expensive? I know £85 million is a lot, but you’re never going to get a really top midfielder now for £50 million,” he critiqued.

United’s pre-season form has been solid, with only one loss to Ruben Amorim’s AC Milan, and Marcus Rashford appears to be a key figure in Carrick’s plans going forward, with indications that he will remain at the club this season.

As the new Premier League season looms, Carrick’s tenure will be closely scrutinised, with supporters eager to see how his strategies unfold amidst the ongoing pressures of top-flight football.

In football, management often hinges on the fine line between success and failure, a reality Carrick faces as he seeks to establish his legacy at a club that demands nothing less than excellence. This season will not only test his mettle but also amplify the chorus of critics and supporters alike, reminding us of the scrutiny that follows those in high places within the beautiful game.
