Joe Root abolishes curfew for England Test squad ahead of Pakistan series
Joe Root has torn up the ECB’s midnight curfew as his first significant action since resuming the England Test captaincy, urging his squad to take personal responsibility ahead of next week’s Pakistan series, reports BritPanorama.
The 35-year-old, who took over the captaincy from Ben Stokes following the all-rounder’s retirement in June, made the announcement alongside new head coach Stephen Fleming. “There’s not going to be a curfew. I don’t think this needs to be a big deal, to be honest,” Root said on the Sky Sports Cricket Podcast.
Root expressed his belief that curfews were ineffective, stating, “My view on curfews is I don’t think they work, and if you want guys to take responsibility on the field they’ve got to be able to feel they can be grown adults off it and make good strong decisions off it.”
The opening Test against Pakistan is set to start on 19 August at Headingley, Root’s home ground. This decision follows a turbulent twelve months for English cricket off the pitch, including incidents during last winter’s Ashes tour of Australia, where several players were reportedly intoxicated while trailing 2-0 in the series.
In November, white-ball captain Harry Brook faced consequences after being punched by a nightclub bouncer on the eve of a one-day international in New Zealand. Tensions escalated further following June’s home series against New Zealand when Stokes and fast bowler Gus Atkinson were dropped from the second Test at The Oval for violating the midnight curfew after a late-night incident outside a London nightclub.
Both players returned for the third Test, but Stokes later announced his retirement from international cricket after the series, which England lost 2-1. The Cricket Regulator determined that the curfew rules had been poorly communicated to the squad.
Rob Key, managing director of the ECB, had previously instituted a set of stringent behavioural guidelines in July 2026, which included a midnight curfew and other restrictions aimed at improving player conduct. Root and Fleming have now dismantled those restrictions entirely, with Root asserting that discipline will be managed within the team.
“That’s for us as a team to manage well, and self-police well… ultimately you’re grown adults, you know what it takes to play for England, you know what your responsibilities are off the field,” Root said.
Root highlighted the significance of England’s reputation, insisting it should rest on their playing performances rather than off-field controversies. “We should be known for how we play our cricket and what we do on the field,” he added, stressing that players should enjoy celebratory moments without feeling restrained.
The ECB endorsed the new approach, acknowledging that the shift in leadership has led to a reconsideration of team standards and culture. “We will ensure all players have a clear understanding of expectations when they come together for the upcoming Test series,” the governing body stated.
With Root’s considerable leadership experience, including a record 65 Tests and 27 victories during his prior tenure, the England side faces the Pakistan challenge as part of the ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle, currently sitting seventh in the rankings.
As the players prepare for the series, Root’s approach signals a marked shift towards self-management and responsibility, reflecting a belief that maturity and personal accountability are key to England’s success on the field.
