China admits failure of Long March 7A rocket launch following in-flight anomaly

China’s Long March 7A rocket fails during launch

China’s Long March 7A rocket carrying the ChinaSat-4B satellite experienced a failure following an in-flight anomaly shortly after its liftoff from the Wenchang space launch site in Hainan on Monday, reports BritPanorama.

The rocket lifted off at 8:02 p.m. Beijing time (8 a.m. ET), as reported by Xinhua, the state-run news agency. It confirmed the mission’s failure and stated that an investigation into the cause is currently underway.

China’s National Space Administration has not yet responded to requests for further information regarding the incident. Observers noted that the rocket appeared to be completely destroyed at a relatively low altitude and speed, indicating that neither the satellite nor any debris reached orbit.

Elon Musk, founder and CEO of SpaceX, commented on the failed launch via a post on X, stating, “rockets are insanely hard,” and expressed hope for a “speedy recovery” for the Chinese team’s efforts. Many Chinese firms are attempting to compete with SpaceX in the space sector.

Monday’s incident marks the Long March 7A’s first failure since its maiden flight in March 2020, which also ended in a malfunction. The rocket had previously returned to service successfully and completed over a dozen successful missions before this latest attempt.

A report from China National Radio, which was subsequently removed, identified the payload as ChinaSat-4B and noted that the Long March 7A rocket is a modified version of the Long March 7. This satellite is meant to be part of a series also including ChinaSat-4A, which was launched in 2024 and is intended for telecommunications, broadcasting, and data services over vast areas.

Such high-orbit communications satellites serve critical roles in relaying services to remote areas not accessible by conventional networks. However, it is unclear whether ChinaSat-4B shares the same capabilities or customer base.

As a medium-lift rocket, the Long March 7A is specifically designed for high-orbit missions. The findings from the ongoing investigation will determine whether the failure is isolated to this specific model or if it necessitates broader scrutiny of interconnected components, manufacturing processes, or operations at the launch site.

Blaine Curcio, founder of Orbital Gateway Consulting, termed the incident “not a great development” but noted that the damage appears limited based on currently available information. He pointed out that the rocket’s primary function is to deploy communications satellites into higher orbits, suggesting that the failure will not significantly disrupt plans for deploying satellites in low Earth orbit.

China is concurrently preparing for the Chang’e-7 lunar mission at the same launch facility, with intentions to launch in the latter half of 2026. However, some launch observers have pinpointed a potential window for this mission as soon as late this month. The Long March 5 rocket and spacecraft are already at the site for the upcoming mission.

Chang’e-7 aims to explore the Moon’s south pole, specifically targeting areas that may harbor water ice in permanently shadowed craters. This mission will utilize a Long March 5, a larger rocket distinct from the Long March 7A. It appears that the recent setback will not substantially affect the preparations for the Chang’e-7 timeline.

The space sector in China continues to face challenges, with ongoing developments that are closely monitored both domestically and internationally.
