Nigel Farage proposes deportation of foreign criminals to El Salvador
Nigel Farage has initiated discussions with El Salvador regarding the potential deportation of all foreign criminals to the country’s notorious prisons, should he achieve the role of Prime Minister, reports BritPanorama.
A delegation from the Reform party is scheduled to visit the Central American nation within the next few months to engage in feasibility talks with the Salvadoran government. The proposed plan aims to facilitate the deportation of approximately 10,000 foreign prisoners currently detained in the UK, thereby addressing the Overcrowding issue in domestic prisons.
Farage is expected to expand his proposals significantly, intending to send Britain’s most dangerous criminals, including murderers and rapists, to El Salvador’s penal system. His party’s chairman, Lee Anderson, will lead the visit to El Salvador later this year, as discussions will first explore the possibility of “renting” prison spaces for this purpose.
The former Prime Minister of the United States, Donald Trump, had previously entered into a similar agreement with El Salvador to deport migrants, which raised concerns over the harsh realities of the country’s prison conditions. Meanwhile, Farage’s plans draw attention amidst ongoing debates over Labour’s early release scheme that threatens to expedite the release of thousands of inmates, even in the face of considerable public opposition.
In his updated strategy, Farage will also propose the creation of pop-up “Nightingale prisons” to secure an additional 12,000 prison places. The reforms are intended to ensure that dangerous offenders do not benefit from early release schemes while reinstating short sentences for less severe offenses, such as shoplifting.
Home Affairs spokesman Zia Yusuf stated, “We will deport all 10,000 foreign nationals from our prisons, sending them to serve their sentences in countries like El Salvador. We will use the space created to ensure that serious criminals stay where they belong: behind bars.”
A Ministry of Justice representative commented on the risks associated with overcrowded prisons, emphasizing that unchecked criminality could arise if prison capacity were to collapse, thus impeding law enforcement activities.
The unfolding developments underscore the ongoing tension in UK immigration and criminal justice policies, with the potential for significant ramifications should these proposed measures come to fruition.
