Russian strike hits Ukrainian stadium, injuring one
A Russian strike has hit the Chornomorets stadium in Ukraine, injuring a 29-year-old woman ahead of a top-division football match, reports BritPanorama.
The shelling resulted in extensive damage, destroying the roof, windows, and stands, according to Ukraine’s State Emergency Service. The stadium, which has a capacity of 34,000, was scheduled to host a Ukrainian Premier League fixture between Chornomorets and Kolos on August 8.
The injured woman suffered shrapnel wounds, as reported by Odesa’s regional governor, Oleh Kiper. There has yet to be confirmation regarding the status of the match and whether it will be cancelled or postponed.
This incident underscores the ongoing ramifications of the conflict in Ukraine, which has persisted since 2022, and highlights the challenges faced by athletes amid the war. Top Ukrainian team Shakhtar Donetsk, for instance, has been forced to play its matches abroad and is currently exploring options for their upcoming Champions League fixtures.
Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium is one potential venue under consideration, as negotiations are reported to be underway for Shakhtar to play there next season. In its past Champions League campaigns, Shakhtar has played in various locations, including Krakow, Poland, and Gelsenkirchen, Germany.
With Brentford narrowly missing out on European football for next year, their stadium may serve as a crucial alternative for the Ukrainian side. As Shakhtar officials stated: “We will not comment on the process until a decision is announced in the near future,” indicating the complexities surrounding venue negotiations under current circumstances.
