Ben Stokes reveals reasons behind Test retirement
Ben Stokes has revealed the rationale behind his unexpected retirement from Test cricket, citing concerns over his physical capability to compete until the 2027 Ashes, reports BritPanorama.
The former England captain shocked many in June when he announced his decision during England’s third and final Test against New Zealand. This announcement followed a turbulent series in which Stokes and teammate Gus Atkinson were dropped for the second Test after breaching team curfews following a victory at Lord’s.
During the celebrations, a confrontation arose in Chelsea’s Rex Rooms nightclub, leading to an incident involving a member of the ECB’s security team and Saracens academy player Totoa Auvaa.
Despite returning for the series finale, the 35-year-old has now publicly commented for the first time on the elements leading to his retirement. In an appearance on the Love of Cricket podcast, he expressed that he initially aimed for the 2027 Ashes as his retirement date but soon realised his body could not support reaching that milestone.
“There’s a lot to it that I think is just not for today or for the near future,” he said, adding, “I was thinking about the Ashes in 2027 and even spoke to Clare about this before making my decision.”
Stokes indicated that as time passed, his focus shifted from planning a farewell in Australia to facing immediate challenges. He explained, “Playing for Durham I’m going, ‘How am I even going to get to the end of the New Zealand series?'”
While this chapter of his international playing career has concluded, Stokes intends to remain involved in cricket. He has returned to play for Durham in the One Day Cup and is reportedly in discussions with the Sydney Sixers about joining the Big Bash this winter.
As he looks beyond playing, Stokes has outlined firm ambitions. He is pursuing his Level Three coaching qualification and harbours aspirations to one day lead the national team. “I’m doing my level three coaching now,” he shared, articulating his desire to remain connected to the sport.
“I want to be a coach. Would I love to be coach of England one day? Absolutely,” he concluded, reflecting a commitment to integrating his future within the game beyond just playing. In an era where transitions are frequent, Stokes’s trajectory reaffirms how players evolve within the cricketing landscape.
