Two individuals in Michigan have died in connection with a recent outbreak of cyclosporiasis, health officials reported. These fatalities mark the first known deaths linked to a multi-state outbreak of the infection, which has been causing significant concern across the United States, reports BritPanorama.

Both deceased had significant underlying health conditions, which were likely exacerbated by the infection and subsequent dehydration, according to the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services. The department has not disclosed any further details about these cases.

While deaths from cyclosporiasis are rare, the infection can lead to debilitating symptoms. The health department noted that a total of 11,234 cases have been reported in Michigan to date, with 193 individuals requiring hospitalization.

Cyclosporiasis, caused by a microscopic parasite, can contaminate fresh food or water, leading to severe diarrhea among those infected. The season for such infections typically peaks from May through August, and this year the case counts have been notably high. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported over 18,000 cases of domestic cyclosporiasis this season, with 6,707 cases confirmed and approximately 11,500 under further investigation.

Multiple clusters of cyclosporiasis are currently under investigation by the US Food and Drug Administration, the CDC, and state health partners, including a significant multistate outbreak primarily affecting the Midwest. Recently, a recall was issued for iceberg lettuce supplied by Taylor Farms, as it is suspected that contaminated products may have been consumed prior to removal from store shelves.

As the investigation continues, health officials are emphasizing the importance of food safety during this outbreak.
