Earthquake in Kumamoto prefecture injures dozens

About 80 people injured during the earthquake in Kumamoto prefecture are receiving treatment at the Yatsushiro Northern Regional Medical Center in Hikawa, according to NHK.

The report further indicates that approximately 10 individuals were also hurt at a nursing home in the same town. The incident underscores the potential risks associated with natural disasters in populated areas.

A staff member at Hayao-en Special Nursing Home for the Elderly described her experience during the quake, revealing, “I clung to my desk, but the shaking was so strong I couldn’t keep my balance. Residents in wheelchairs fell over and a staff member fell on me, cutting my arm and causing bleeding. About 10 people were injured, but there are no serious injuries,” as cited by NHK.

This event highlights the vulnerability of care facilities during seismic activities and the challenges they face in ensuring the safety of residents. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of emergency preparedness in such establishments, particularly in earthquake-prone regions, reports BritPanorama.
