Chelsea in talks to sign Danny Welbeck from Brighton
Chelsea are in advanced discussions to bring Brighton striker Danny Welbeck to Stamford Bridge, with growing confidence on both sides that an agreement can be struck, reports BritPanorama.
The 35-year-old former Arsenal and Manchester United forward has entered the final year of his contract at the Amex Stadium, and Brighton are understood to be open to letting him depart for an appropriate fee.
Initial conversations between the two clubs, Welbeck and his representatives have been positive, with internal talk at Chelsea suggesting the move is progressing well. Welbeck’s tally of 13 goals from 37 Premier League outings last term — including a brace in Brighton’s 3-1 victory at Stamford Bridge — has caught the attention of new manager Xabi Alonso, who values the striker’s experience and leadership credentials alongside his goalscoring prowess.
The pursuit represents a notable shift in Chelsea’s recruitment philosophy, which in recent seasons has prioritised young, high-potential talent over proven performers. With goalkeeper Robert Sanchez, aged 28, currently the oldest member of the first-team squad, Alonso’s desire for a more mature dressing room appears to have been endorsed by the club’s hierarchy.
Chelsea presently have five senior strikers on their books: Joao Pedro, Nicolas Jackson, Liam Delap, Emmanuel Emegha and Marc Guiu. Pedro is regarded as the club’s first-choice forward and deemed “untouchable” following an impressive debut campaign that yielded 15 league goals. Delap, signed from Ipswich for £30m last summer, is viewed as second choice but endured a difficult first season and had been expected to receive another year to establish himself. Jackson, meanwhile, spent last term on loan at Bayern Munich and has drawn interest from Aston Villa.
Should Welbeck’s transfer materialise, Chelsea are expected to offload or loan out several forwards to trim the squad before the new campaign. The Blues have been prolific spenders this summer, having already completed a £117m deal for Morgan Rogers — making him the most expensive British footballer in history — alongside an agreement worth more than £52m for Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix. Alonso has also overseen the arrivals of Marco Palestra, Geovany Quenda, Denner and Dastan Satpaev, though many of those transfers were pre-arranged before his appointment.
Welbeck, capped 42 times by England, joined Brighton in 2020 and signed a 12-month extension in March, keeping him at the club until the end of the 2026-27 season. Further spending is anticipated before the window closes.
