France battles wildfires with air support as evacuations escalate
France is deploying a massive specially adapted cargo aircraft to dump flame retardants on a wildfire that has forced the evacuation of tens of thousands of residents, including from suburbs of Bordeaux, reports BritPanorama.
The situation has escalated in southern Europe, with wildfires displacing more than a quarter-million people—including approximately 70,000 evacuated in central Spain. French Interior Minister Laurent Nunez indicated that the hulking A400M aircraft will assist in what is anticipated to be a “long and very difficult” battle against the blaze raging in the Gironde region.
With winds expected to shift on Saturday afternoon, potentially pushing the fire closer to Bordeaux, fire crews are employing various tactics, including digging trenches and using retardants. Nunez reported that the fire had advanced to about 20 miles west of the city.
The French government has mobilized soldiers to assist in firefighting efforts and is deploying 1.5 million face masks to protect locals from choking smoke. Evacuation orders have been issued for those living between the fire and Bordeaux, impacting areas including the city’s western suburbs and surrounding towns.
Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu described the fire situation as unprecedented, noting that the Gironde blaze has grown so powerful it is generating its own winds. Authorities have stressed the urgency of adhering to evacuation orders, with Lecornu posting on X: “Our priority is clear: protecting human lives.”
As firefighting teams are bolstered by hundreds of soldiers, supplies such as breathing masks are being rushed to the affected region. The rapid spread of the wildfires, intensified by extreme heat and climate change, has overwhelmed local emergency responders. Firefighters in Spain have reported that the flames spread so fast and violently they could not confront them directly, while in France, evacuations occurred even by boat as flames engulfed coastal tourist towns.
Though dozens of French firefighters have sustained injuries, no fatalities have been reported in either country amidst scenes of chaos as locals fled in their vehicles while authorities informed them of the evacuation.
Record-high temperatures this year have created ideal conditions for wildfires, with fires consuming 130,000 hectares of forest in Spain—significantly above the annual average of 100,000 hectares over the past decade, as noted by Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez during a visit to a command post outside Madrid.
In more positive news, Sánchez mentioned that Saturday’s weather offers a “window of opportunity” for firefighters as conditions begin to improve with decreased winds and temperatures. Meanwhile, other European nations are aiding firefighting efforts; Italy is sending two Canadair planes to Spain, while Greece has two more planes en route, joined by others from the Netherlands and Portugal.
France is also expecting assistance, with two water-bombers from Croatia, in addition to two heavy-lift helicopters from the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Sophie Brocas, prefect of the Gironde region, warned on Friday night that strong winds had pushed the fire closer to Bordeaux. She described the situation as “an unprecedented magnitude” and informed that evacuation alerts were sent directly to mobile phones of residents in affected areas.
The Gironde blaze ignited Wednesday near the Cap Ferret peninsula, about 60 kilometres from Bordeaux. “It’s quite impressive and even frightening,” remarked local resident Laurent Moretti, reflecting on the unprecedented scale of the evacuation and expressing hope for a swift resolution.
