Argentina requests to wear alternative kit ahead of World Cup semi-final against England

Argentina have made a special request ahead of their World Cup semi-final against England, with the reigning champions hoping to wear an alternative strip for Wednesday night’s blockbuster in Atlanta, reports BritPanorama.

Under the guidance of Lionel Scaloni, Argentina will face Thomas Tuchel’s England for a place in the World Cup final. However, attention has swiftly turned to an unexpected off-field issue concerning the teams’ kits.

According to Argentine journalist Gastón Edul, Argentina have asked for permission to don their blue away shirt instead of their traditional sky blue and white stripes. A final decision on the request is anticipated on Tuesday, just hours before one of the tournament’s most eagerly awaited matches.

England has been designated as the home side for the fixture, meaning they are expected to wear their classic white kit. While Argentina’s iconic home shirt does not pose a significant colour clash, FIFA retains the final say over matchday kit combinations and any requests from competing teams. Argentina has only worn their blue strip once during this World Cup campaign.

The darker shirt holds sentimental value, associated with Argentina’s notable victories over England in past World Cups. The memories of wearing blue when Diego Maradona led Argentina to a 2-1 win in the 1986 quarter-finals, and beating England on penalties in the 1998 World Cup—both pivotal moments in football history—could be influencing their choice this time around.

England arrives in the semi-finals having secured a 2-1 extra-time victory against Norway, with Jude Bellingham playing a crucial role by scoring both goals. Argentina, on the other hand, also required extra time to defeat Switzerland 3-1 in their quarter-final match.

As the teams prepare for their latest showdown, Lionel Messi, who has scored eight goals thus far in the tournament, is relishing the opportunity to face England for the first time. He acknowledged the historical significance of the matchup, noting, “Everything I have seen and remember about Argentina vs. England… is from videos and images that Argentinians constantly watch and relive.” Messi understands the weight of such encounters, stating, “We’ll try to arrive in the best possible shape to compete again.”

With the backdrop of history and anticipation, the World Cup semi-final promises to be a defining moment for both teams, showcasing not only their sporting prowess but also the rich narrative woven through their past confrontations on football’s grandest stage.
