This switch is dictated by FIFA’s strict rules aimed at avoiding colour clashes, rather than any superstitious beliefs amongst the players. England’s official kit for the tournament features a white shirt, white shorts, and white socks. Previously, they wore the full kit against Croatia and the DR Congo, and opted for a red away kit against Panama during the group stage.
Nonetheless, FIFA’s equipment regulations, under Rule 6.2.1, have prevented England from wearing white shorts in matches against Ghana and Mexico, as it was necessary for garments to contrast with those of the opposition. These rules advocate for both teams to wear their primary kits wherever feasible, only prompting adjustments when colours are too similar.
In the encounter against Mexico, the hosts were designated as the home side and thus had precedence over kit choice. Mexico’s selection of green shirts and white shorts restricted England from wearing white shorts themselves, forcing a change to navy. Similarly, in their group-stage meeting with Ghana, England faced a comparable kit conflict.
This time, Norway, listed as the home team, will wear a modified version of their home kit with red shirts and navy shorts, avoiding any possibility of a shorts clash and enabling England to revert to their classic look. The familiar attire may provide a psychological boost as they pursue a second consecutive World Cup semi-final appearance.
England’s path to the semi-finals will be hindered by Norway’s Erling Haaland, who has emerged as a key threat after scoring seven goals in the tournament. Tuchel acknowledged that neutralizing the Manchester City striker will require a concerted effort from his defensive line rather than relying on individual performers.
“You can’t avoid focusing, for sure not,” Tuchel stated.
