Thomas Tuchel criticizes refereeing in World Cup victory over Mexico

Thomas Tuchel has criticized the referees for being “not good enough” following England’s dramatic 3-2 victory over Mexico in the World Cup, reports BritPanorama.

The England manager expressed his discontent with several officiating decisions that he felt harmed the team, particularly a penalty that was eventually awarded against Harry Kane when he clipped Brian Gutierrez’s boot while clearing the ball in the penalty area. The initial foul was not called by Australian referee Alireza Faghani.

After a VAR check by Nicolas Gallo of Colombia and his assistants from Chile and Venezuela, the officials overturned Faghani’s decision, resulting in a penalty for Mexico. This development led to a tense final half hour as England defended their narrow lead for one of their most significant World Cup wins.

Reflecting on the officiating, Tuchel stated, “It’s just not good enough. The referees are just not good enough, fourth officials are just not good enough. That’s the bottom line.” He added that the VAR process raises questions about what constitutes a clear and obvious error, suggesting that the call for a penalty did not meet that standard.

Despite the challenges presented by the officiating, Tuchel commended his players for their resilience, noting that their heart and belief were instrumental in achieving the victory. He remarked, “If a team has heart and belief, then it’s this team. They did it on pure will. That’s an iconic match, an iconic stadium. We overcame so much adversity today. Very proud.”

When discussing the atmosphere, Tuchel described it as emotional rather than hostile, emphasising the support his team felt. England captain Kane also commented on the experience, calling it “one of my favourite nights in my career” and said, “What a crazy, crazy game. So many things against us…but we stuck at it.” He highlighted how the team’s understanding of accountability and cooperation strengthened their resolve.

England’s performance showcased significant determination as they played with ten men for substantial portions of the match. Tuchel reflected, “We scored three goals away from home against a team that have not conceded in the tournament…the one thing we do have is complete desire, determination and pride in the shirt.” The team is now set to face Norway in the quarter-finals of the World Cup at 10pm on Saturday.

Amid the ups and downs of the game, Tuchel’s post-match criticisms serve as a reminder of the fine margin that often defines both victory and resolve in football, a world where the human elements of passion and error invariably collide.
