Emma Raducanu withdraws from Wimbledon due to injury

Emma Raducanu has withdrawn from Wimbledon citing a stress fracture in her lower right leg, reports BritPanorama.

The 23-year-old announced her withdrawal just hours after expressing her intention to compete against Croatia’s Antonia Ruzic on Court One. Raducanu stated, “I’ve done everything possible to try to get to the start line, but after a final scan tonight, the niggle I’ve been managing has developed into a stress fracture.”

Concerns about Raducanu’s fitness had been mounting prior to her announcement. She was observed wearing a protective boot earlier in the week and missed training sessions on both Thursday and Friday. Despite returning to the court on Saturday with support strapping on her leg, her practice session was cut short.

Earlier on the day of her withdrawal, Raducanu had remained optimistic about her condition, asserting that she intended to play. “I’ve been managing it with my team as best as I possibly can, exhausting all options,” she explained. However, following medical advice, she made the difficult decision to step back from the tournament.

Raducanu’s last appearance on court was at the Queen’s Club Championship, where she reached the final against strong competition. This ongoing injury adds to a challenging period for the British No.1, who has faced significant fitness issues in recent months.

The withdrawal not only marks a setback for Raducanu but also leaves a gap in the draw for the tournament, highlighting the intense physical demands of professional tennis. In the world of sport, injuries remain an ever-present spectre, reminding athletes and audiences alike of the frailty of human endeavour against the backdrop of high expectations.
