Emma Raducanu poised for return at China Open
Emma Raducanu could make her eagerly awaited return to competitive tennis at the China Open later this month following a three-month injury lay-off, reports BritPanorama.
The former US Open champion is on the entry list for the prestigious WTA tournament in Beijing, set to commence on September 28. Raducanu has not competed on the WTA Tour since reaching the final of the Queen’s Club Championships in June, where she was defeated by Donna Vekic.
During her time away from the circuit, Raducanu has been recovering from a stress fracture in her right leg, which also caused her to miss the entire North American hard-court season, including the US Open—an event where she famously triumphed as a qualifier in 2021.
Her past achievements at the US Open have become a benchmark for her career, but recent years have seen her struggle with injuries and inconsistency. Nonetheless, her name on the China Open entry list suggests that her rehabilitation is progressing, although it does not guarantee her participation as players can withdraw until the tournament starts.
If she competes, Raducanu will face a competitive field that includes 11 Grand Slam singles champions, such as Aryna Sabalenka, Coco Gauff, and Elena Rybakina. Defending champion Amanda Anisimova is also expected to play, further intensifying the challenge for Raducanu.
The 23-year-old retains some fond memories of last year’s event despite an early exit against Jessica Pegula, where she was unable to convert three match points. With the hope of returning to form, all eyes will be on whether Raducanu confirms her participation in Beijing ahead of the tournament’s start.
As Raducanu navigates the path of recovery, the coming weeks may well define not only her season but also her trajectory in the sport, illuminating the fine line athletes walk between persistence and the pressures of competitive integrity.
