Iran captain criticizes FIFA after World Cup struggles

Iran’s captain, Mehdi Taremi, has accused FIFA of neglecting his team following a disappointing World Cup campaign that he described as a “disaster”. This criticism came after Iran’s 1-1 draw with Egypt in Seattle left their chances of advancing to the knockout stages in jeopardy, reports BritPanorama.

The match saw Iran believing they had secured a late victory when Shoja Khalilzadeh found the net, only for the goal to be disallowed after a lengthy VAR review due to offside. Saeid Ezatolahi later came close, hitting the crossbar, but ultimately, Iran settled for a single point. With Belgium and Egypt already qualifying from Group G, Iran is now left hoping for a place as one of the best third-placed teams.

Taremi expressed his frustration post-match, voicing concerns that the team’s World Cup experience has been overshadowed by issues such as visa complications, travel restrictions, and the political climate with the United States. “We always complain about these things since the beginning, it’s a disaster World Cup. A disaster,” he stated, adding, “As professional players in a professional competition, it’s not right. It’s not fair.”

The team was forced to relocate their training camp to Tijuana, Mexico, after some members of their delegation were denied entry into the U.S. Taremi pointed out that FIFA has not provided adequate support despite earlier assurances from President Gianni Infantino. “Who wants to help us? No one helps. No one,” he lamented.

Taremi’s sentiments echo those of head coach Amir Ghalenoei, who criticized the treatment of his squad, describing the USA’s behaviour as “really terrible”. During a press conference, Taremi was asked whether he believes the tournament organizers might prefer for Iran to be eliminated. “I don’t know if people want that or not but as we see it from our perspective, yeah, they are like that I think,” he responded.

Despite the setbacks, Taremi maintained that the team still believes in their capability to advance. “I feel sad but we have hope,” he remarked, emphasizing their commitment to their supporters back home. “We play for our people. We want them to be happy because we want to bring joy.” In a powerful statement, the Iranian squad left a message in their dressing room after the match, underscoring their perspective on integrity and sportsmanship.

The note read: “For us, football is not only a competition for results, it is a test of character. Perhaps points can be won in many ways, but respect cannot.” With their World Cup journey in the balance, Iran continues to seek recognition while standing firm in their quest for fair play.

As the tournament progresses, it remains a poignant illustration of how sport can amplify voices amidst adversity, echoing the hopes and struggles of a nation striving for dignity on the global stage.
