France confirms first Ebola case linked to humanitarian trip to Democratic Republic of the Congo

First Ebola case reported in France amid DRC outbreak

A patient in France has tested positive for Ebola after returning from a humanitarian mission in an area where the virus is circulating in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC), the French Health Ministry said on Wednesday, reports BritPanorama.

This case represents the first reported instance of Ebola in France and marks the first positive test outside of Africa amid the second-largest Ebola outbreak on record in DRC. The outbreak is attributed to the rare Bundibugyo strain of the virus, which is without a vaccine or specific treatment. Recent CDC data indicates that at least 267 individuals have died in DRC, alongside two in Uganda, with over 1,000 confirmed cases in DRC.

The unnamed patient in France is currently in stable condition and was immediately admitted to a specialized facility upon arrival. The French Health Ministry confirmed that all precautionary measures, particularly patient isolation, were enacted right away, including secure hospital transfer to mitigate any risk of transmission.

A comprehensive epidemiological investigation is now underway to identify individuals who may have come into contact with the patient. Those identified will be placed under a 21-day period of home isolation and closely monitored by health authorities.

The ministry emphasized that the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) has evaluated the risk of Ebola infection as “very low for the general European population.” Additionally, France has implemented a monitoring system for its humanitarian workers returning from affected areas.

Earlier this year, European authorities managed another Ebola case involving American doctor Peter Stafford, who contracted the virus while working in DRC and was subsequently treated in Germany.

The situation highlights ongoing global health challenges, particularly in regions where zoonotic diseases persist.
