Six arrested during England’s World Cup win against Croatia
Six individuals were taken into custody during England’s World Cup victory over Croatia. Among those arrested was one person charged with criminal trespass, as multiple supporters reportedly bypassed security protocols to gain entry to the venue without proper checks, reports BritPanorama.
The other five arrests involved a variety of offences, including drug-related charges, public intoxication, and the sale of counterfeit merchandise. Officials from Arlington Police confirmed that none of those arrested were British nationals.
In addition to the arrests, officers responded to two separate altercations within the stadium during the match; however, these incidents did not lead to further arrests. Police indicated that stadium staff generally manage unruly spectators prior to requesting police assistance, suggesting that many incidents are resolved without the need for officers.
To heighten security, surveillance drones monitored the crowds, while officers patrolled the stadium perimeter on segways leading up to the event. A spokesperson for FIFA stated they were unaware of fans gaining access to the stadium without tickets.
The security concerns echo incidents surrounding the Euro 2020 final at Wembley Stadium, where numerous ticketless fans forced their way inside. This breach prompted an inquiry by Baroness Louise Casey, which concluded that the incident endangered lives. Following the Wembley event, tailgating for football matches was criminalised in the UK.
On a more positive note, England marked a strong start to the tournament with a 4-2 win over Croatia. Harry Kane, Jude Bellingham, and Marcus Rashford all contributed to the scoring, setting a hopeful tone for the remainder of the competition.
Manager Thomas Tuchel praised Kane’s leadership and performance, acknowledging his impact on the game and the commitment he displayed on the pitch. He also highlighted Bellingham’s crucial role, noting his effectiveness in high-pressure situations.
