Declan Rice eases fitness concerns after World Cup opener

Declan Rice has alleviated worries about his fitness, stating he has been managing a minor issue for several weeks following England’s 4-2 victory over Croatia at the World Cup, reports BritPanorama.

The Arsenal midfielder was substituted with 18 minutes remaining in Dallas, exhibiting signs of physical distress during the match, which raised alarms among fans and manager Thomas Tuchel. Rice, who left the field with a noticeable limp, was replaced by Morgan Rogers as England secured their win.

Despite the concerning situation, the 27-year-old has reassured that there is no significant injury and anticipates participation in the upcoming match against Ghana next Tuesday. “All good. Good as gold,” Rice told ITV post-match, emphasizing that he is merely dealing with “little neural pains” stemming from the latter part of his season at Arsenal.

Rice’s performance was instrumental in England’s opening success, contributing an assist to Harry Kane, who netted twice, alongside goals from Jude Bellingham and Marcus Rashford. However, Tuchel admitted he was reluctant to risk injury to a key player, even as Rice downplayed the discomfort. “I hope they are okay,” Tuchel noted, expressing caution despite Rice’s assurances.

“Declan pointed to his lower back, upper hamstring and feels some discomfort,” Tuchel added, emphasizing that protecting Rice was paramount. England’s first half displayed a disjointed effort, prompting a strong half-time talk from Tuchel, encouraging players to embrace a more liberated style of play.

Anthony Gordon shared how the manager’s words sparked a resurgence: “He said, ‘Loosen up’. What’s the worst that can happen – we lose the game? So what! Let’s go out and be ourselves.” This shift appeared to energize the team, leading to a stronger second half.

With Rice now claiming fitness and Tuchel optimistic that the issue is minor, hope is high that England’s midfield lynchpin will be fit to face Ghana, crucial for maintaining momentum in their quest for knockout stage advancement. After that, they’ll square off against Panama.

Indeed, as the team gears up for their next challenge, how they balance caution with confidence could well determine their fate in this fiercely contested tournament.
