Emma Raducanu reflects on Serena Williams’ return to tennis
Emma Raducanu has expressed admiration for Serena Williams’ remarkable return to professional tennis at 44, whilst acknowledging she cannot envision herself following a similar path, reports BritPanorama.
The British star was asked whether she could picture remaining on the WTA Tour for another twenty years. “I personally don’t,” Raducanu responded. “But a lot of the players who do are older, if you asked them when they were younger, they wouldn’t have said it.” She added that advancements in sports science have made extended careers more viable, stating, “With sports science, it’s much more achievable. I have respect for anyone who comes back and plays for the duration.”
Williams sent shockwaves through the tennis world when she announced her return to competitive action at this age. She will participate in next week’s Queen’s tournament, marking her first professional appearance since 2022, pairing with 19-year-old Victoria Mboko for the doubles event. Their opening match present challenges as they face the third-seeded duo of Nicole Melichar-Martinez and Erin Routliffe.
Raducanu, the 2021 US Open champion, is also preparing for her own campaign at Queen’s, beginning against a qualifier and drawn on the opposite side of the bracket from top seed Elena Rybakina. Her last competitive outing resulted in a first-round exit at Roland Garros, where Argentina’s Solana Sierra defeated her.
In her preparation, Raducanu has reunited with Andrew Richardson, the coach who led her to victory in New York four years ago, seeking to return to a more aggressive style of play on grass. In the doubles event, she will team up with compatriot Katie Boulter, facing Storm Hunter and Shuai Zhang in their opening match.
Williams’ achievements in doubles are noteworthy, boasting 16 Grand Slam titles alongside her 23 singles majors, a significant accolade that underscores her legacy in the sport. She remarked on her expectations for the upcoming tournaments, stating, “Every tournament I add to my schedule right now feels special, and Berlin is no exception. I’m excited to compete in front of the German fans and continue building momentum throughout the grass-court season.”
