Upcoming blue moon to light up the sky this weekend, marking rare celestial event

True blue moon this weekend

This weekend will feature a blue moon, marking the second full moon to appear in a single month. The event is noteworthy as it occurs roughly every two to three years, reports BritPanorama.

The celestial phenomenon comes about seven times every 19 years. The full moon will reach its peak on Sunday at 4:45 a.m. ET, coinciding with a micromoon, when the moon is at its farthest point from Earth in its orbit. This full moon will be approximately 252,334 miles (406,093 kilometers) from our planet, notably farther than the average distance of 238,855 miles (384,400 kilometers).

Despite its name, a blue moon does not actually appear blue; it retains its typical silvery white or golden hue. The term “blue moon” was first documented in the 1937 Maine Farmer’s Almanac and has since evolved to signify this particular celestial event, according to experts.

Understanding the blue moon

A blue moon can be categorized in two ways: a calendrical blue moon occurs when two full moons are present in a month, while a seasonal blue moon happens in a season with four full moons, identifying the third full moon as a blue moon. The next seasonal blue moon is anticipated on May 20, 2027.

While traditionally associated with rare occurrences, the phrase used to describe a blue moon has historical roots dating back to the 1500s, signifying something deemed impossible. Although rare, the moon can appear blue under certain atmospheric conditions, such as the presence of smoke or dust, as was reported following the eruption of the Krakatoa volcano in 1883.

Viewing the blue moon

For those interested in witnessing this astronomical event, it will be best observed just before sunrise on Sunday. With the occurrence of the micromoon, the appearance may not be significantly smaller to the naked eye, although celestial enthusiasts will appreciate the subtleties that accompany this lunar event.

The last blue moon, which occurred in 2023, was a supermoon, highlighting the moon’s closest approach to Earth. By comparison, this year’s blue moon will showcase a micromoon, a different phenomenon altogether. As the sky darkens, enthusiasts will have opportunities to capture striking photographs of the moon, particularly during its rising in the twilight hours.

As the blue moon graces the sky, those across various time zones will experience its beauty at different times, reinforcing the vastness and allure of our celestial companion.
