England prioritises player wellness ahead of 2026 FIFA World Cup
The Football Association will provide England national football team players with personalised bedding and sleep aids at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as Thomas Tuchel leaves no stone unturned in his quest to end the nation’s long wait for glory, reports BritPanorama.
In a bid to enhance recovery during the tournament across the United States, Canada, and Mexico, Tuchel has engaged sleep specialists to cater to the needs of his squad. Key players such as captain Harry Kane and midfielder Jude Bellingham are expected to benefit from this initiative.
The England squad will be based at The Inn at Meadowbrook, near Kansas City, having secured exclusive access to the entire hotel for the duration of their campaign. Standard accommodations will be enriched with custom mattresses and pillows tailored to the specific body shapes, weights, and sleeping preferences of each player, according to reports.
Additional items will include specially designed cooling pillows, contoured eye masks to block out light, and earplugs to mitigate external noise. This emphasis on sleep management aligns with the broader performance strategy being developed in collaboration with the UK Sports Institute.
Dr Luke Gupta, a performance innovation consultant with experience in elite sport, has been advising the FA on optimal recovery protocols. He encourages players not to panic if they encounter difficulties sleeping after evening matches and to consider daytime naps as part of their recovery practices.
The approach builds on similar methods utilised in previous tournaments, including the installation of blackout blinds during the 2018 FIFA World Cup, aimed at addressing the unique lighting conditions in St Petersburg. Custom sleep arrangements were also part of the setup during UEFA Euro 2024, when England reached the final.
Tuchel’s meticulous attention to detail underlines a commitment to maximise the team’s performance, with expectations set high as England prepares to open their World Cup campaign against Croatia in Dallas on June 17, hoping to claim their first title since 1966.
As England focuses on these innovative enhancements, the balance of tradition and modern strategy could play a crucial role in shaping their journey in the tournament ahead.
