Rory McIlroy clashes with fan during PGA Championship

Rory McIlroy’s temper snapped during the final round of the PGA Championship when a spectator got under his skin at the worst possible moment, reports BritPanorama.

The Northern Irishman had been battling all day at Aronimink, and the incident escalated on the par-five 16th hole. After finding the rough with his tee shot, McIlroy attempted an aggressive approach but watched his ball bounce off the fringe and tumble into a greenside bunker.

A fan shouted something that clearly crossed a line, prompting McIlroy to spin around, fury written across his face, and snap: “Shut the f*** up.” He wasn’t done there, however.

The World No.2 used his club to point directly at the culprit, ensuring security knew exactly who needed to be ejected from the course. The fan was swiftly removed, missing the remainder of Sunday’s action. Sky Sports then issued an apology to viewers for the colourful language that aired live.

This is not the first instance of McIlroy clashing with American crowds; during last year’s Ryder Cup at Bethpage, he faced a torrent of abuse, resulting in one spectator being ejected for using a homophobic slur, while his wife Erica Stoll was hit by a thrown drink.

Despite the drama, McIlroy managed to scramble for par on the hole, but the damage to his title hopes had already been done. The Masters champion endured a challenging afternoon, finding just four of 14 fairways as his driving repeatedly let him down.

His putting was also a struggle, as several birdie chances slipped away narrowly, including a 44-footer on the 12th that stopped just 11 inches short. McIlroy finished with a 69, concluding the tournament at four-under and five shots behind the winner.

Aaron Rai stole the show with a stunning final-round 65, claiming his first major championship. The 31-year-old from Wolverhampton finished on nine-under par, becoming the first Englishman to lift the Wanamaker Trophy since Jim Barnes in 1919, and breaking a run of ten consecutive American winners at the PGA Championship.

As McIlroy’s quest for a seventh major title continues, it’s a reminder of the delicate balance between high stakes, intense emotion, and the unpredictable nature of sport. Each moment serves as a testament to both the pressures faced by professionals and the fervent passions of fans.
