Reform UK aims for Makerfield by-election victory, posing challenge to Labour's Andy Burnham

Reform UK targets Makerfield by-election as key opportunity

Reform UK expresses optimism about its chances of winning the Makerfield by-election, a contest seen as crucial for Sir Keir Starmer, reports BritPanorama.

Concerns are mounting within Labour circles about the possibility of losing to Nigel Farage’s party. MP Josh Simons’ decision to step aside has paved the way for a contest that could see Andy Burnham return to Parliament, potentially increasing pressure on Labour leadership.

Analysis from Survation indicates Burnham could secure 45 per cent of the vote against Reform’s 43 per cent in Greater Manchester. However, speculation arises that another Labour candidate would fall significantly short, receiving only 27 per cent compared to Reform’s potential 53 per cent.

A source from Reform UK stated, “We are strong there. Our grassroots infrastructure is strong across the North West.” Despite this, they acknowledged the need to consider the implications of Burnham’s involvement, which complicates the electoral landscape.

Reform is expected to leverage Burnham’s previous stance on rejoining the EU, given that the constituency voted 65 per cent in favour of Leave. In a potentially complicating factor, Rupert Lowe’s right-wing Restore Britain party has announced it will field a candidate, which could siphon off votes from Reform.

Furthermore, Labour MPs are reportedly displeased at the expectation to defend the seat primarily to facilitate Burnham’s political ambitions, with comments emerging about the challenging situation. “The local elections were crushingly good for Reform. This is not a safe seat,” remarked one Labour MP.

As the by-election approaches, the dynamics within Makerfield reflect broader tensions within Labour and the emerging competition from Reform UK, highlighting a shifting political landscape.

This contest not only underscores the internal challenges facing Labour but also illustrates the increasing relevancy of Reform UK in a changing electoral environment. The outcome will be closely watched, as it may signal shifts in voter sentiment that could affect the broader political landscape in the UK.
