Jamie Carragher responds after Rio Ferdinand likens him to Keir Starmer on social media

Jamie Carragher and Rio Ferdinand’s rivalry reignites on social media

The long-running rivalry between Jamie Carragher and Rio Ferdinand has flared up once again on social media after Carragher softened his previous criticism of Manchester United midfielder Casemiro in a column for The Telegraph, reports BritPanorama.

Ferdinand took to X to mock his former England teammate, suggesting that Carragher “makes more U-turns than Starmer,” accompanied by several laughing emojis. The jibe seemingly referenced Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s reputation for changing positions on various issues.

Previously, Carragher had advised Casemiro to “leave the football before the football leaves you” back in 2024. In response to Ferdinand’s comments, Carragher insisted his latest remarks were not a complete reversal. “Not a full U-turn but credit where it’s due to Casemiro for looking after himself properly, while playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world on £350k a week,” he stated.

Carragher further pushed back against Ferdinand’s criticism, indicating a need for the latter to answer for his connections with FIFA. “I’ll await your full U-turn on support for Infantino and his World Cup ticket prices,” Carragher challenged, referring to Ferdinand’s involvement in the 2026 World Cup draw and his silence on ticket cost controversies.

The Brazilian midfielder Casemiro faced heavy scrutiny after Manchester United’s dismal 4-0 defeat to Crystal Palace in May 2024, prompting discussions about his future at the club given his significant salary. However, he has since rebounded, playing a crucial role in United’s midfield and helping the team secure a top-four finish for the first time since 2023.

This public spat is part of a larger history of exchanges between Carragher and Ferdinand, including Carragher previously labeling Ferdinand a “clown” during a CBS broadcast in 2023. Ferdinand has reciprocated with shots about Carragher’s limited role in the England squad, while Carragher has suggested Ferdinand is more focused on his podcast persona than football analysis.

Interestingly, despite their social media clashes, Ferdinand has previously remarked that there is no animosity when they meet face to face, highlighting the contrasting nature of their public personas and personal interactions.

For two players who often spar in public, these latest exchanges serve as a reminder of how the world of football commentary can spark both sharp rivalry and unexpected camaraderie in the real world.
