Jannik Sinner breaks Djokovic’s record with 32-match winning streak
Jannik Sinner has etched his name into tennis history by breaking Novak Djokovic’s record for consecutive victories at ATP Masters 1000 events, extending his extraordinary winning streak to 32 matches, reports BritPanorama.
The 24-year-old Italian, currently ranked number one in the world, defeated 12th seed Andrey Rublev 6-2, 6-4 to secure his place in the Italian Open semi-finals. This triumph also moved Sinner closer to joining Djokovic as only the second player to capture all nine Masters 1000 titles.
The victory in Rome maintains his pursuit of a sixth successive title at this level, putting him in excellent form as he approaches the French Open, which begins on May 24. Sinner’s success this season is underscored by matching Rafael Nadal’s feat of reaching the semi-finals at each of the opening five Masters 1000 tournaments.
Next, he will face either Daniil Medvedev or Martin Landaluce for a spot in the final. Earlier this month, Sinner claimed the Madrid title, making history as the first player ever to win five consecutive Masters 1000 crowns. He emphasized the importance of recovery, stating, “Now the highest priority for me is trying to recover as much as I can physically.”
Sinner acknowledged the emotional weight of competing at home, noting, “Emotionally it takes a lot playing here at home. At the same time, I’ll definitely try to do my best.” Since his only Masters 1000 defeat in Shanghai, he has amassed 45 victories from 47 matches across all competitions.
Throughout his record-breaking sequence, Sinner has claimed 64 of the 66 sets contested, securing titles at Indian Wells, Miami, Monte-Carlo, and Madrid this year, in addition to his Paris triumph last November. His overall Masters 1000 record now stands at 121 wins from 150 matches, placing him second only to 22-time major champion Nadal.
With two more wins, Sinner could become the first Italian men’s singles champion in Rome since Adriano Panatta half a century ago.
